ABOUT UNIVERSITY
Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) is a public research university located in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, with campuses at City Campus near Sheffield railway station and Collegiate Crescent Campus in southwest Sheffield. A third campus at Brent Cross Town in London is set to open in the 2025–26 academic year. It is one of the largest universities in the UK, with over 32,000 students, including 4,400 international students, and more than 700 courses. The university’s origins date back to 1843 with the establishment of the Sheffield School of Design, founded to support the city’s growing industrial base. It later became the Sheffield School of Art in 1850 and expanded its educational scope over the following decades. In 1905, the City of Sheffield Training College was established, and during World War I, its Collegiate Hall served as a military hospital. The 1960s saw major campus development, including the construction of the Owen Building, which became an architectural symbol of the university. In 1969, the Sheffield School of Design merged with the College of Technology to form Sheffield Polytechnic, later merging again in 1976 to become Sheffield City Polytechnic. In 1992, it gained university status and became Sheffield Hallam University. Over the years, SHU has expanded both academically and physically, introducing new faculties and research centers. In 2005, the university reorganized into four faculties and focused on enhancing teaching and research, particularly in health and wellbeing. The university also took over nursing and midwifery education from the University of Sheffield in 2007 and later opened the energy-efficient Furnival (now Cantor) Building in 2008. Today, Sheffield Hallam University continues to evolve, emphasizing research, innovation, and expansion, with its upcoming London campus expected to host up to 5,000 students by 2030.
