COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Biomedical Sciences program offers a structured curriculum designed to build both fundamental knowledge and advanced expertise across key areas of human health and disease. In the first year, students are introduced to the essential building blocks of life sciences through modules such as Becoming a Bioscientist, Cell Biology and the Origin of Life, Genetics, Chemistry of Life, Fundamental Biochemistry, Protein Biochemistry and Enzymology. Alongside this, introductory courses in animal and human physiology and a focus on academic integrity lay the groundwork for future study. The second year advances into more specialised areas, with modules such as Human Physiology in Health and Disease, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Neuronal and Cellular Signalling, and Pharmacology and Toxicology, enabling students to deepen their understanding of disease mechanisms and treatment processes. In the final year, students undertake an Individual Research Project, giving them the opportunity to apply their skills in an independent, laboratory-based investigation, often contributing to the department’s wider research culture. The year also includes a focus on the Molecular Basis of Inherited Disease, offering insight into genetic disorders and their underlying molecular pathways. Together, this progression of study develops strong scientific knowledge, research capability and transferable skills for careers in biomedical sciences.
