COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Drama and Creative Writing program at Royal Holloway offers a comprehensive curriculum that balances practical theatre training with creative writing study. In the first year, students explore the fundamentals of performance and text through modules such as Theatre and Performance Making 1 and Theatre and Text 1, alongside an introduction to creative writing and the history and theory of writing. This foundation equips students with essential skills in both performance and written expression, encouraging them to think critically and creatively about storytelling. In the second year, students begin to specialise in their chosen creative writing forms, studying playwriting, fiction, and poetry, allowing them to develop distinctive voices and experiment with different narrative techniques. In the third year, students advance their skills through Playwriting 2, Fiction 2, and Poetry 2, while engaging in special focus modules in creative writing to refine their individual projects and artistic vision. The program fosters collaboration and self-directed learning, enabling students to integrate theory and practice in meaningful ways. By the end of the course, graduates gain a deep understanding of the interplay between drama and writing, equipping them for careers as playwrights, authors, theatre-makers, or other creative professionals, with the skills to contribute thoughtfully and innovatively to contemporary literature and performance.
