COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Ancient History program is structured to provide a progressive and comprehensive understanding of classical civilizations, focusing on Greece and Rome. In the first year, students engage with foundational topics, including Greek history and the city-state, key themes in Roman history, and the methods and approaches used in studying classical antiquity, establishing essential skills in historical analysis and interpretation. The second year deepens this exploration with specialized modules that examine the rise and fall of the Roman Republic, the development of the Roman Empire from Augustus to Commodus, and detailed studies of Greek history both before and after 404 BC. Additionally, students study Greek historiography and the historiography of the Roman world, enhancing their ability to critically assess primary and secondary sources and understand the ways historical narratives are constructed. In the third year, the focus shifts to independent research through an extended essay or dissertation, allowing students to pursue a topic of particular interest in depth, applying the analytical, research, and interpretive skills developed throughout the course. By combining structured learning with opportunities for independent scholarship, this program equips students with a thorough knowledge of classical history, critical thinking abilities, and research expertise, preparing them for careers in academia, cultural heritage, education, and other professions requiring strong analytical and communication skills.
