COURSE CURRICULUM

This Urban Landscape Architecture degree follows a structured three-year curriculum designed to build both foundational and specialist knowledge in the field. In Year 1 (Level 4), students are introduced to the core aspects of the built environment, the design process, and essential theoretical and technical skills. The first two terms feature a shared curriculum with related courses such as Interior Design Environment Architectures and Architecture, promoting interdisciplinary learning. In the third term, students begin to focus on landscape-specific topics through a dedicated Landscape Unit. Key modules include Structure, Introduction to Construction, Introduction to Landscape Architecture, Architectural Theory and History, and Professional and Business Practice. Students are also encouraged to begin thinking about their contextual research early in the course.Year 2 (Level 5) transitions into deeper subject exploration and the creative application of skills gained during the first year. Students take part in specialist Urban Landscape Design Studios, focusing on ecological, urban, and social design contexts. They also continue to engage in shared History and Theory modules with students from other disciplines, fostering broader architectural understanding. Collaborative design briefs support teamwork and simulate professional studio environments. Modules may include Site and Ecology, Urban and Social Ecologies, Scales of Urbanism, and History and Theory of the City.In Year 3, students consolidate their learning through a major individual design project where they address real-world urban landscape challenges such as population density and resource management. This final year also includes a long-form dissertation, allowing students to present in-depth research alongside their design work. The year concludes with modules like Negotiated Brief, Major Project, and Preparing for Professional Practice, ensuring students graduate with a well-rounded portfolio that showcases their ability to tackle complex environmental and urban design problems, preparing them for careers in urban planning, design, or further study.
