COURSE CURRICULUM

The Product Design degree offers a progressive, hands-on learning experience across three years, beginning with a strong foundation in 2D and 3D design, user research, and essential design software. In the first year, students develop their individual approach to design, learning the iterative process and building key skills such as empathy and user-centered thinking through modules like Ergonomics, Inclusion and Empathy, and Interacting with Products. They engage with both live and self-initiated briefs, starting to build confidence in their practical abilities and contextual understanding of design.In the second year, the course shifts focus toward deeper design development and real-world application. Students study materials, manufacturing methods, and sustainable practices while participating in collaborative projects and work-based learning. Modules such as Sustainable Design in Practice and Open Innovation help learners explore design’s broader impact. The emphasis on collaboration and professional engagement ensures that students gain valuable insights into industry processes and teamwork.By the third year, students are prepared to take full creative control, working independently on a major design project for the Degree Show. They develop a professional portfolio, engage in industry competitions, and respond to collaborative briefs. The final year also includes a contextual dissertation, demonstrating students' research capabilities and critical thinking. With modules like Portfolio and Promotion and Professional Life Practice, students graduate ready to enter the design industry as confident, skilled, and thoughtful product designers.
