COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the BA (Hons) Music and Sound Production course at Ravensbourne University London, students build foundational skills in music and sound production, including studio and location recording, editing, postproduction, electronic arrangement, and composition. They begin to develop their own musical ideas and gain confidence through responding to creative briefs, while also gaining essential knowledge about the music and sound production industry and the career opportunities within it. Alongside this, students are introduced to contextual studies, encouraging them to begin thinking critically about their creative practice. Modules during this year may include Music and Sound Theory Fundamentals, DAW Software Techniques, Studio and Audio Production Workflows, and introductory Professional Life Practice.In the second year, students deepen their technical and creative abilities, gaining a broader understanding of industry-standard equipment and software. They start to specialize in areas such as music composition and sound design, applying advanced workflows across various formats. Students are encouraged to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects, developing teamwork and professional communication skills. Modules may include Composition, Sound Synthesis and Digital Audio Processing, Music for Film and TV, Sound Postproduction, Music and Sound for Games, and Advanced Mixing and Mastering, alongside work-based learning and Professional Life Practice.The final year focuses on preparing students for professional work in the industry. They consolidate their learning through a final portfolio and a major self-initiated project that demonstrates their individual style and technical ability. Students also complete a long-form dissertation that reflects their contextual research and critical thinking. This portfolio acts as a promotional tool or showreel for employment or further study. Final modules include Specialist Project, Major Project, Professional Profile Development, and Professional Life Practice. By graduation, students are equipped with a refined skillset, a strong portfolio, and a clear professional trajectory.
