COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Illustration for Communication degree is a studio-led course designed to develop both creative and professional skills through a structured, progressive journey over three years. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of illustration through workshops, hands-on projects, and exposure to a range of creative tools including computing, animation, photography, and digital print. This stage focuses on idea generation, documentation, process experimentation, and image-making, supported by talks from industry professionals. Core modules such as Introduction to Illustration Practice and Narrative Concepts and Communication help students explore visual storytelling and the cultural context of illustration.In the second year, the course shifts focus to developing a more personal and reflective approach to image-making. Students are encouraged to explore their own artistic identity, creative thinking, and philosophical perspectives. Electives and collaborative projects with students from other disciplines promote interdisciplinary practice. Key modules such as Self-authorship and Publishing and The Extended Practice support students in deepening their understanding of illustration, while a work-based learning opportunity provides valuable professional experience.The final year prepares students for transition into the industry. It centres on professional-level projects, competitions, and live briefs, culminating in a self-directed major project that demonstrates the student’s vision and capabilities. Students compile a professional portfolio tailored to their intended career path, while modules in self-promotion and professional life practice ensure they graduate with the confidence and tools needed to succeed.
