COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Games Design course provides a structured and immersive experience for students looking to enter the games industry with strong creative and technical abilities. In the first year, students develop essential skills in game design while gaining an understanding of the broader cultural and political context of games. Key areas of study include an introduction to game studies, games culture, basic design skills, and the use of key software pipelines. Students apply their knowledge to level design and explore the role of narrative in shaping player experience, laying the groundwork for more advanced study.In the second year, the course delves deeper into the design process, from research and concept development to the creation of design assets suitable for AAA titles, indie games, or tabletop experiences. Students learn the importance of research in shaping effective game assets and gain experience with documentation and technologies for prototyping. The theory and practice of writing for games are also introduced, helping students build compelling and immersive game narratives. Throughout the year, students explore various design roles in the gaming industry, allowing them to begin identifying their own areas of interest and potential career paths.By the third year, students focus on refining the skills and knowledge developed in earlier stages of the course. Emphasis is placed on professional practice, portfolio development, and the completion of a final major project that reflects their unique strengths and specialism. Students are encouraged to shape their work around their career aspirations, producing a polished and thoughtful submission that demonstrates industry readiness.
