COURSE CURRICULUM
The MSc in Podiatry (Pre-Registration) curriculum provides comprehensive training in the scientific, clinical, and professional aspects of podiatric practice, preparing students to become registered podiatrists in just two years. In Year One, students build a strong foundation in human anatomy and physiology, focusing particularly on the lower limb, foot, and ankle, alongside the study of body systems such as the cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, and nervous systems. Modules in Medicine and Pathology develop an understanding of diseases and conditions relevant to podiatry, while Preparing for Professional Practice introduces the wider health and social care environment and develops critical academic skills at master's level. Students also study Normal and Pathological Gait and Biomechanics to understand movement patterns and mechanical principles underlying foot function and dysfunction. Applied Research Methods develops the ability to evaluate evidence and conduct research, and the Musculoskeletal/Orthopaedics module equips students with assessment and diagnostic skills for lower limb conditions. Clinical training begins through Podiatric Clinical Practice A, where students develop practical skills in assessment, orthotic management, local anaesthesia, and evidence-based treatment approaches. In Year Two, the focus shifts towards advanced and complex podiatric practice. Students complete a Dissertation, undertaking an independent research project that demonstrates academic rigour and professional inquiry. Entrepreneurship and Leadership for Professional Practice develops management, leadership, and innovation skills relevant to healthcare settings. Specialist modules such as High Risk Foot and Dermatology, Diagnostic Investigations, and Pharmacology for Podiatric and Surgical Practice provide expertise in managing complex foot conditions, interpreting diagnostic tests, and understanding medication use in podiatric and surgical care. Through Podiatric Clinical Practice B, students refine their clinical reasoning and treatment skills, manage complex cases, and receive training in procedures such as steroid injection therapy. The programme combines scientific knowledge, research, and extensive clinical experience to prepare graduates for professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council and successful careers in the NHS, private practice, or independent podiatry services.
