COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Participatory Arts at Queen Margaret University combines theoretical study, practical engagement, and project-based learning to prepare students for careers in community arts and socially engaged creative practice. The programme begins with Practice Research, where students explore how their own creative practice can become a form of research through reflection, theoretical study, and learning from experienced practitioners and guest speakers. Applied Arts: Theories and Histories of Participatory Arts examines the historical development and theoretical foundations of participatory arts, using case studies and previous projects to help students understand the legacies and complexities of socially engaged practice. Principles of Participatory Practice focuses on practical skills such as communication, dialogue, group facilitation, and community engagement, allowing students to work directly with groups and communities to build confidence and professional experience. The Fundraising, Finance and Development module develops essential skills in financial management, fundraising strategies, sponsorship, and funding applications, providing knowledge that is particularly valuable for arts practitioners and community organisations. Planning and Marketing Cultural Projects introduces the practical aspects of managing and promoting cultural initiatives, with students designing and marketing hypothetical projects in collaborative groups. The Only Way is Ethics: Art Representation and Ethics encourages critical thinking about ethical issues in participatory practice, exploring historical and contemporary examples and helping students develop their own ethical frameworks for working with communities and the public. To complete the degree, students undertake a 60-credit Practice-Based Dissertation, which involves designing and delivering a real-world participatory arts project with a chosen community or one of the university's partner organisations, such as Out of the Blue or Craigmillar Now. This final project includes planning, ethical approval, delivery, evaluation, and reflection, enabling students to graduate with a substantial portfolio piece that demonstrates their professional skills and readiness for careers in participatory and community arts practice.
