COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Psychology programme is structured over four years to provide a comprehensive understanding of human behaviour, psychological theory, and research methods, while also developing strong academic, analytical, and professional skills. In Year One, students are introduced to foundational psychological theories, the scientific method, and key areas such as cognitive, social, developmental, and biological psychology, alongside interdisciplinary perspectives from sociology and education. They also begin building essential academic skills in research, writing, and critical thinking through modules like Foundations of Psychology, Methods of Social Enquiry, and Developing Your Academic Voice. In Year Two, students deepen their understanding of core psychological domains while developing research skills and engaging with real-world applications of psychology. Modules such as Biological and Cognitive Psychology, Developmental and Social Psychology, and Individual Differences and Well-Being help students explore human behaviour in greater depth, while professional-focused learning enhances awareness of psychology in practice and potential career pathways. Year Three focuses on advanced analysis of psychological concepts and research, with an emphasis on critical thinking, ethics, and applied understanding. Students study areas such as social justice, developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, and psychobiology, while also gaining hands-on experience in both qualitative and quantitative research methods. In Year Four, students tailor their learning through optional modules and a capstone experience that connects psychology to real-world issues, alongside a major independent research dissertation. Modules such as Psychology for Contemporary Issues and Conceptual and Historical Issues in Psychology encourage critical reflection on the discipline, while elective options allow exploration of specialist areas like sport psychology, environmental psychology, or social policy. Overall, the programme provides a strong blend of theoretical knowledge, research expertise, and applied understanding, preparing graduates for diverse careers or further study in psychology and related fields.
