COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Psychology and Sociology programme is structured over four years to provide students with a strong interdisciplinary understanding of human behaviour and society, combining psychological theory with sociological perspectives. In Year One, students build a foundational understanding of key concepts, theories, and schools of thought in both disciplines, while exploring their historical development and modern applications. They also develop essential academic and transferable skills such as communication, critical thinking, research, reading, writing, and presentation abilities through modules including Introduction to Sociology, Foundations of Psychology, Psychology in Practice, and Methods of Social Enquiry. In Year Two, students begin to develop research skills in both psychology and sociology, learning how to evaluate evidence, construct arguments, and apply interdisciplinary thinking to contemporary social issues. They also engage in work-based learning and reflective practice, supported by modules such as Exploring Research, Culture and Society, Self and Identity, and optional pathways in cognitive, developmental, or social psychology. Year Three focuses on advanced methodological understanding, ethical awareness, and research competence, with students critically evaluating both qualitative and quantitative approaches in psychology and sociology. They also have opportunities for placements or international study, alongside modules such as Quantitative Research Methods, Qualitative Research Methods, Interaction and Social Order, and specialised psychology or sociology options. In Year Four, students specialise further by selecting option modules and completing an independent dissertation in either psychology or sociology, demonstrating their ability to conduct original research and critically engage with academic literature. They also take a module focused on articulating their graduate identity, helping them reflect on their skills, strengths, and future career direction. Overall, the programme equips graduates with a deep, integrated understanding of individuals and society, alongside strong analytical, research, and communication skills that support careers in social research, public services, education, policy, and a wide range of professional fields.
