COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Spatial Planning program combines compulsory and optional modules to develop advanced knowledge and practical skills in planning, sustainability, urban design, and regeneration. Core modules include Place Making, where students learn how to evaluate and design high-quality urban environments through live redevelopment projects, and Planning for Sustainable Futures, which explores sustainability principles and their role in spatial planning and policy. Planning Frameworks introduces legal systems, governance, policy, and professional planning practice in the UK and internationally, while Research Methods develops the ability to design and carry out effective research projects in spatial planning. Students can further specialise through optional modules such as Contemporary Approaches to Urban Design, which focuses on critical urban design interventions; Effective and Proportionate Environmental Impact Assessment, which examines environmental and social impact assessment processes and sustainable development planning; Sustainable Development, which explores innovative infrastructure strategies that support social equity, environmental sustainability, and economic growth; and Urban Regeneration and Historic Conservation, which studies conservation strategies, regeneration projects, and community participation in historic environments. The program concludes with a Dissertation module, where students undertake independent research in their chosen area of specialisation under academic supervision. Through research, critical analysis, and practical learning, the course prepares graduates for professional careers in planning, sustainability, urban development, and regeneration across public and private sectors.
