COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management develops advanced knowledge and practical skills needed for managing costs, contracts, and commercial aspects of construction projects within the built environment. The program focuses on understanding how people, leadership, and organisational behaviour influence project performance, including communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, and cultural differences. Students learn project planning, scheduling, control, and risk management using industry-standard tools, alongside techniques such as cash flow analysis, value management, and decision-support software. A strong emphasis is placed on sustainable construction and managing technology, including Building Information Modelling (BIM), off-site construction, and low-carbon building methods, while also considering the human and environmental context of projects. Quantity surveying practice develops expertise in measurement techniques, cost estimation, tendering processes, and professional responsibilities using standards such as NRM2 and CESMM4. Research methods training prepares students for independent academic inquiry by introducing qualitative and quantitative approaches and research design skills. The program culminates in a dissertation where students conduct an in-depth research project under supervision, producing an original, high-quality study based on primary research.
