COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Medical Genetics and Genomics provides advanced academic and practical training for students aiming to work in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, genomics, healthcare science, or research. The course develops a strong understanding of genetics, bioinformatics, and the molecular basis of disease, while building essential laboratory, analytical, communication, and research skills. Students study advanced molecular biology techniques including PCR, DNA cloning, sequencing technologies, transcriptomics, and genome analysis, gaining hands-on experience through laboratory and bioinformatics workshops. Modules explore clinical genetics, personalised medicine, biomarker discovery, infectious diseases, and the role of genomic technologies in diagnosis and treatment. Students also examine monogenic and polygenic disorders such as cystic fibrosis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancers, and blood disorders, learning how genetic mutations influence disease development. The program emphasises data analysis, computational genomics, and the use of modern genomic databases and tools for healthcare applications. Throughout the course, students engage with current research, clinical case studies, journal discussions, and emerging developments in genome science and medical diagnostics. The degree concludes with a substantial independent research project, either laboratory-based or computational, allowing students to apply their knowledge creatively and develop original research skills relevant to professional scientific and clinical environments.
