COURSE CURRICULUM

The MFA Fine Art program combines professional development, studio practice, and theoretical research to help students become confident and independent artists. Through the Professional Experience module, students prepare for careers in the creative industries by exploring placements, collaborative projects, curatorial practices, exhibition management, and links between academic study and professional practice. Fine Art Practice I encourages students to undertake sustained research and develop a self-directed project that challenges and expands their existing artistic methods, ideas, and experiences. Working closely with a supervisor, students produce practice-based work informed by materials, processes, contexts, and theoretical concerns, culminating in a public presentation of work in progress. Fine Art Theory I strengthens understanding of modern and contemporary art by engaging students in seminars, discussions, presentations, and critical analysis of key texts and cultural debates. In Fine Art Theory II, students independently research a chosen topic and produce an extended critical essay that develops a sustained theoretical argument related to modern or contemporary art and visual culture. The final module, Fine Art Practice II: Major Project, serves as the culmination of the course, where students create and exhibit an advanced body of work for the MFA Show. Guided by a supervisor, this major project demonstrates intellectual creativity, professional development, and advanced contemporary fine art practice, while preparing students for future careers or further artistic opportunities.
