COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Urban Design develops advanced knowledge and practical skills for shaping cities and public spaces through a combination of theory, research, and design-based learning. The program begins with Contemporary Approaches to Urban Design, which builds a shared understanding of key urban issues such as social, political, environmental, and economic factors, while developing skills in site analysis, morphology, and visual communication. Urban Design Masterplan to Public Realm is a studio-based module where students apply these concepts to real or simulated sites, producing professional-level masterplanning strategies supported by academic and industry guidance. International Urban Design Theories for Design and Planning broadens the perspective to global contexts, exploring how cities respond to challenges such as climate change, technological innovation, and social transformation. Urban Design in Challenging Contexts focuses on applying design solutions in complex environments, including high-density cities and culturally distinct settings, encouraging adaptable and future-oriented thinking. Research Methods in Design equips students with qualitative and quantitative research skills relevant to urban design practice and analysis. The program concludes with a Design Dissertation or Major Project, where students independently develop a research study or critical design proposal focused on an urban context. Overall, the course prepares graduates to address complex urban challenges and contribute to sustainable, inclusive, and well-designed cities at both local and global scales.
