COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in International Relations at Oxford Brookes University provides students with a strong understanding of global politics, security, governance, and international policy through a combination of theoretical study, research training, and practical experience. Core modules explore major themes in international relations, including the role of the state, global development, democracy, security, colonialism, race, gender, and sustainability, while encouraging students to critically analyse contemporary global issues using diverse theoretical perspectives such as feminist, critical, and poststructural approaches. Students also develop advanced research skills through modules focused on designing and conducting independent research using methods such as interviews, surveys, discourse analysis, and documentary research. A wide range of optional modules allows students to specialise in topics including global development, terrorism, media and politics, peacebuilding, global governance, and the politics of Ukraine and international conflict. The program also offers opportunities for independent study and work-based learning placements with organisations connected to international relations, policy, and security. Research trips to Brussels and The Hague provide valuable insight into institutions such as the European Union, NATO, and international courts. The course concludes with a supervised dissertation based on a topic linked to students’ professional or academic interests, enabling them to conduct detailed research and present informed arguments. Overall, the program equips graduates with analytical, research, communication, and policy skills valuable for careers in diplomacy, NGOs, government, media, and international organisations.
