COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Global Development and Humanitarian Practice provides an interdisciplinary understanding of development, humanitarian action, human rights, forced migration, and conflict studies. Students critically examine global issues such as poverty, vulnerability, disasters, conflict, climate change, and social justice while exploring how political systems, aid structures, and humanitarian responses affect communities worldwide. The course develops strong analytical and research skills through both qualitative and quantitative methods, preparing students to assess complex humanitarian and development challenges. Optional modules allow students to specialise in areas including refugee protection, human rights, humanitarian response in conflict zones, post-disaster housing and community recovery, and practice-based learning through placements or independent studies. Students engage with real-world case studies, simulations, debates, and contributions from experienced practitioners and researchers, gaining practical insights into international development and emergency response. A major dissertation forms the final stage of the program, enabling students to explore a topic of personal or professional interest in depth through written work or creative formats such as films, websites, or performances. Overall, the course prepares graduates for careers in humanitarian organisations, NGOs, policy development, advocacy, research, and international development practice with a strong focus on ethical, inclusive, and sustainable approaches.
