COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Creative Writing program at Oxford Brookes University combines creative experimentation, literary study, and professional development to help students grow as confident and skilled writers. The core Writing Studio module encourages students to move beyond familiar approaches and experiment with new forms, styles, and creative directions through workshops led by academics and Creative Writing Fellows. Students can then specialise in areas such as fiction, poetry, storytelling, voice, publishing, or independent creative research. Modules like Bringing a Story to Life explore narrative techniques including structure, pacing, dialogue, and unreliable narrators, while Writing Poetry Now examines contemporary poetry, voice, form, and experimentation. Writing Voice focuses on tone, identity, dialect, narration, and the relationship between authors and characters across different literary forms. Students may also study publishing-focused modules such as Trade Publishing and Children’s and Young Adult Publishing, gaining insight into the commercial and creative aspects of the publishing industry. Independent Study modules allow students to design their own research or writing projects based on personal interests and career goals. The program concludes with The Writing Project, where students produce an extended original work in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, or scriptwriting, supported by workshops and individual supervision. Alongside the creative project, students complete a reflective commentary demonstrating their understanding of writing craft and creative development. Overall, the course provides a supportive environment for developing professional-level creative writing and industry awareness.
