COURSE CURRICULUM

The Paramedic Science BSc (Hons) at Oxford Brookes University combines academic learning, clinical practice, and professional development to prepare students for a successful career as a registered paramedic. In the first year, students build foundations in values-based care, evidence-informed practice, bioscience, patient assessment, and professional study skills. They develop essential clinical abilities through simulation and placements while learning about anatomy, physiology, ethical practice, teamwork, and emergency patient management across the lifespan. In the second year, students expand their knowledge through modules in mental health, public health, research methods, pathophysiology, and applied paramedic practice. They gain deeper understanding of acute and chronic illnesses, emergency care, vulnerable patient groups, and the wider social and environmental factors affecting health. The final year focuses on independent professional practice, advanced pharmacology, leadership, research, and preparation for professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Students complete a major research or service improvement project while refining their clinical decision-making and reflective practice skills. Throughout the course, supervised placements, simulation-based learning, and evidence-based teaching help students gain confidence in delivering urgent and emergency care. Graduates leave prepared for independent practice in ambulance services and wider healthcare settings, with strong clinical, communication, and leadership abilities.
