COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medical Science BSc (Hons) course provides a comprehensive understanding of human biology, physiology, genetics, and disease through a combination of theoretical study, laboratory practice, and research-based learning. In the first year, students build strong foundations in cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, and scientific skills, developing practical laboratory techniques, data analysis abilities, and professional communication skills. The second year expands into more specialised areas including molecular biology, genetics, blood and transfusion science, integrated physiology, biochemistry of cell function, and healthcare research methods, while introducing advanced laboratory and biomedical diagnostic techniques. Students gain experience in cell culture, DNA technologies, and research ethics, preparing them for scientific and healthcare careers. In the final year, students undertake an independent research project and study pathophysiology to understand disease mechanisms affecting the human body. A wide range of optional modules allows students to explore specialist fields such as neuroscience, cancer biology, clinical genetics, pharmacology, genomics, evidence-based medicine, and advanced bioscience research. Throughout the course, there is a strong emphasis on scientific investigation, critical thinking, practical experimentation, and employability skills. Graduates are well prepared for careers in biomedical science, healthcare, laboratory research, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, clinical diagnostics, and further postgraduate or professional study in medical and life sciences.
