COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminology BSc (Hons) degree is structured over three years to develop a deep understanding of crime, justice systems, and the social factors that influence both. In Year 1, students are introduced to core concepts through modules such as Crime and Criminology in Context, Criminal Justice in Action, Media and Crime, and Understanding Crime and Society, which explore what crime is, how it is defined, and how the criminal justice system operates. Students also build essential academic and research skills while engaging with topics like social change, ethics, and comparative politics. In Year 2, the focus shifts to more advanced and critical perspectives, including Crime and Intersectionality, Researching Crime, Public Criminology, and Globalisation and Crime, alongside optional modules such as organised crime, gendered violence, green criminology, and work-based learning placements. These modules emphasise real-world application, ethical research, and global perspectives on crime and justice. In Year 3, students undertake an independent dissertation while choosing from specialised modules such as policing, prisons, drug policy, cybercrime, sports criminology, forensic anthropology, and state crime. Overall, the program combines theory, research, and practical experience to help students critically understand crime, inequality, and justice systems, preparing them for careers in criminal justice, policing, policy, advocacy, and related fields.
