COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biomedical Science BSc (Hons) at Oxford Brookes University provides a detailed exploration of how the human body functions at cellular, molecular, and systemic levels, and how disease develops and is diagnosed. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, anatomy, and physiology, alongside essential scientific and laboratory skills such as experimental design, data handling, and communication. These core modules establish understanding of how biological molecules, cells, and organ systems interact to maintain health. In the second year, learning becomes more specialised, focusing on areas such as microbiology, cellular pathology, molecular biology, genetics, and blood sciences. Students also gain practical research skills, laboratory experience, and an understanding of disease mechanisms and diagnostic techniques used in clinical settings. The third year consolidates knowledge through advanced study of infection, immunity, clinical biochemistry, pharmacology, genetics, and human disease, alongside an independent research project. Optional modules allow exploration of areas such as neuroscience, cancer biology, and genomics. Throughout the program, students develop strong analytical, practical, and problem-solving skills relevant to healthcare and laboratory science.
