COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biological Sciences (Human Biosciences) BSc (Hons) degree provides a comprehensive exploration of human biology, combining theoretical study with extensive laboratory and research training. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge in cell biology, genetics, human structure and function, quantitative skills, and scientific communication, alongside optional introductions to biochemistry, nutrition, and food science. This stage develops core understanding of how cells, organs, and body systems function, while strengthening essential academic and practical skills. In Year 2, learning becomes more specialised through modules in molecular biology, integrated physiology, genetics, and data analysis, supported by career development training. Students also explore applied areas such as human nutrition, cell biology, bioinformatics, and disease mechanisms, gaining experience with laboratory techniques and computational tools. Optional modules allow further focus on biochemistry, genomics, or nutrition-related topics. In Year 3, students complete an independent research project and advanced professional skills training, while choosing from specialist modules such as neuroscience, cancer biology, clinical nutrition, genomic medicine, and pathophysiology. This year emphasises research, critical analysis, and real-world application, often supported by work experience or independent study. Across the degree, students develop strong analytical, laboratory, and problem-solving skills, preparing them for careers in biomedical science, healthcare, biotechnology, or further study in medical and biological research fields.
