COURSE CURRICULUM

The Midwifery (Post Experience/2nd Registration) BSc (Hons) at Oxford Brookes University is a two-year, NHS-funded program designed for registered adult nurses who want to transition into midwifery. It enables learners to combine existing healthcare experience with specialist midwifery training, focusing on supporting women, babies and families throughout pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal care. Students are employed in NHS roles while studying and develop skills through a blend of academic learning and extensive clinical placements in hospitals, community settings and midwife-led units. The course covers key areas such as anatomy, physiology, public health, human rights, emergency childbirth care, and managing complex maternal and neonatal conditions. Practical training is central, with simulation-based learning and supervised practice helping students build confidence in decision-making, communication and safe clinical practice. In the first year, students focus on foundational knowledge and emergency care, while also developing competence in managing childbirth complications and clinical decision-making. The second year emphasises increasing autonomy, leadership, continuity of care models, and preparation for professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Students also complete a dissertation, allowing them to explore a midwifery-related topic in depth through research or critical analysis. Overall, the program prepares experienced nurses to become qualified midwives with advanced clinical, reflective and leadership skills, ready for independent practice in diverse maternity care settings.
