COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Social Work program combines academic study with extensive practical training to prepare students for professional social work practice. In Year 1, students develop foundational knowledge through modules covering communication, safeguarding, social policy, legal frameworks, professional development, evidence-based practice, and human growth and development. These modules help students understand social work values, ethics, law, human behaviour, and the social factors affecting vulnerable individuals and communities. Year 2 focuses on applying theory to practice through a 70-day work placement and modules such as social work with children, adults, and mental health, alongside community work, sustainable development, and evidence in professional practice. Students gain practical experience in hospitals, care settings, family centres, and community organisations while developing intervention, teamwork, and research skills. The program also strengthens students’ understanding of social work theories, legislation, and evidence-informed approaches to care and support. In Year 3, students complete a second professional placement, a dissertation on a chosen social work topic, and advanced modules on practice learning, professional consolidation, and decision-making for social wellbeing. These modules prepare students for employment by enhancing leadership, ethical reasoning, assessment, and professional practice skills. Throughout the course, students learn to work effectively with children, adults, families, and communities while developing the practical, analytical, and interpersonal abilities needed for successful careers in professional social work and social care services.
