COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Photography degree develops students into creative and industry-ready photographers through a combination of practical, theoretical and professional learning. In Year 1, students build core digital photography skills through studio workshops, portrait photography, lighting techniques and location-based projects. They explore visual storytelling, photobook creation and the cultural, political and theoretical aspects of photography, while learning how images shape meaning and identity. Year 2 expands creative and professional practice by introducing moving image production, media communication, ethics and visual narratives. Students gain experience in filmmaking, client-led briefs, social media, copyright, portfolio building and work placements, helping them understand the demands of the creative industries. The course also develops critical awareness of photography’s social, cultural and political impact through discussions on representation, anthropology and visual ethics. In Year 3, students focus on independent and self-directed work through a Final Major Project, where they create a professional portfolio and exhibition showcasing their creative development and career direction. Alongside this, students complete an extended written research project and undertake career-focused independent practice. Throughout the degree, students work closely with tutors and industry professionals, gaining the technical expertise, critical understanding and professional confidence needed for careers in photography, media, publishing, film and other creative industries.
