COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Japanese Studies course offers an in-depth exploration of Japanese language, culture, history and society while developing advanced communication and analytical skills. In the first year, students build strong foundations in spoken and written Japanese, including kanji reading and writing, alongside learning about Japan’s geography, history, arts, religion and contemporary culture. Optional modules introduce areas such as translation, East Asian cultures and Japanese pop music. In the second year, students strengthen their language abilities to prepare for a potential year abroad in Japan and explore topics including manga, anime, classical arts, modern Japanese history, linguistics and teaching English to adults. Students also develop oral communication, research and independent study skills. In the final year, students reach intermediate to advanced Japanese proficiency through engaging with authentic texts, audio and video materials. They critically examine themes such as Japanese identity, mythology, religion, cinema, literature and translation theory. The course combines language mastery with cultural understanding and practical research experience, preparing graduates for international careers in areas such as translation, tourism, education, business and global communications while providing valuable intercultural awareness and professional skills.
