COURSE CURRICULUM

The International Relations BA (Hons) course provides students with a deep understanding of global politics, international governance and contemporary world issues through a combination of theory, research and practical learning. In the first year, students explore the origins and foundations of international relations, global political challenges and the key theories shaping the discipline. Topics include sovereignty, migration, conflict, human rights, poverty, environmental issues and international cooperation, while students also build essential academic and analytical skills. In the second year, the course develops advanced understanding of international relations debates, research methods and global political systems. Students study areas such as global governance, migration, security, terrorism, international political economy and European politics, while also having opportunities for independent research and work placements with charities, NGOs and community organisations. The program encourages critical thinking about power, inclusion, global inequality and the role of states and non-state actors in world affairs. In the final year, students complete a major dissertation on a topic of personal interest and can specialise in subjects such as human rights, sustainability, peacebuilding, terrorism and counter-terrorism, and conflict resolution. Throughout the degree, students develop research, communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills that prepare them for careers in diplomacy, public policy, international organisations, media, research and global development.
