COURSE CURRICULUM

The History BA (Hons) program offers a wide-ranging and intellectually engaging study of British, European, American and global history from the medieval era to the modern world. Across all three years, students explore themes such as war, politics, empire, religion, crime, race, gender, culture, ideology and social change while developing strong research, analytical and communication skills. Year 1 introduces key historical periods and methods through modules on Britain, Europe, the Cold War and the First World War, alongside optional studies in crime, religion and environmental history. Year 2 deepens critical thinking through historiography, primary source analysis and modern British history, while offering specialist options including witchcraft, crime and punishment, gender and sexuality, information revolutions, dehumanisation, American history and public history placements. In Year 3, students complete an independent dissertation and can specialise further in areas such as Russian history, Renaissance Italy, forensic medicine, witchcraft, violence, slavery, the Vietnam War, racism and political thought. Throughout the course, students examine historical debates, analyse diverse sources and conduct independent research while gaining transferable skills suited to careers in education, law, media, heritage, politics, public service and research.
