COURSE CURRICULUM

The Fine Art and History of Art BA (Hons) combines studio-based artistic practice with academic study of art history, enabling students to develop both creative and analytical skills. In Year 1, students build core foundations through modules such as Global Art in Oxford and Museums and Society, where they develop visual analysis, research skills, and an understanding of how art is produced, displayed, and received across cultures. Alongside this, practical modules like Experimental Projects and Real Art World introduce creative experimentation and early engagement with professional art careers. In Year 2, the course expands into modern and historical art themes while strengthening independent studio practice. Students study periods such as European art from 1450–1700 and modern art developments, while continuing to develop their artistic work through modules focused on experimentation, consolidation, and public engagement. Optional placements, fieldwork in cities like Paris, and independent study deepen professional and academic experience. In Year 3, students focus on advanced independent research, curatorial practice, and major studio projects. They explore specialised seminars and complete a dissertation or independent study alongside producing a final body of creative work for public exhibition. Throughout the degree, emphasis is placed on combining making and critical thinking, preparing students for careers in galleries, museums, curation, teaching, and the wider creative industries.
