COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film BA (Hons) program is designed to combine film theory, history, industry knowledge, and practical filmmaking skills over three years. In Year 1, students are introduced to the fundamentals of film analysis, screen industries, creative practice, research skills, and popular cinema. They study how films are made, how they function as cultural and economic products, and how to critically interpret visual language, sound, editing, and cinematography. Optional modules such as screenwriting also allow early creative development. In Year 2, students deepen their understanding through more advanced study of film style, digital research methods, star and audience studies, and the global film industry. Practical options include screenwriting craft and short film production, alongside modules exploring film festivals, distribution, independent cinema, and audience engagement. This year also encourages research innovation and critical engagement with film culture and industry practices. In Year 3, students focus on specialised topics such as film theory, creative industries, and independent study, while also developing professional-level filmmaking or research projects. Optional modules include short film development, production, and a major dissertation that allows in-depth exploration of a chosen film topic. Overall, the degree blends academic analysis with hands-on production experience, preparing students for careers in filmmaking, media, journalism, festivals, and other creative industries.
