COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature BA (Hons) program provides a broad and engaging study of literature, critical theory, creative writing and digital humanities across different historical periods and cultures. In Year 1, students develop essential academic skills in close reading, research and critical analysis while studying topics such as Shakespeare, Oxford’s literary history, American literature, travel and exile, and literary theory. Optional modules introduce media studies, sociology and creative writing. In Year 2, students explore literature’s relationship with environments, climate fiction, rebellion and censorship, while also developing research and digital humanities skills through independent and collaborative projects. Optional modules allow students to study themes such as Romantic and Victorian literature, American culture, fairy tales, creative writing and professional practice through placements with organisations including publishing houses and cultural institutions. In Year 3, students focus on literature’s connection to citizenship, society and global issues while specialising in advanced topics chosen from areas such as modernism, supernatural fiction, digital narratives and African-American literature. Students can also complete major independent research projects, podcasts, exhibitions or creative works, alongside advanced creative writing focused on publication and professional development. Throughout the course, students build strong communication, analytical, research and creative skills, preparing them for careers in publishing, education, media, marketing, writing and other cultural and professional industries.
