COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Literature with Creative Writing BA (Hons) at Oxford Brookes combines the study of literary history with the development of creative writing skills, allowing students to explore genres, experiment with form, and develop their own voice. The course begins with foundational modules in reading, literary analysis, theory, and Shakespeare, alongside creative writing workshops that build skills in poetry and prose. Students study diverse texts, including travel writing, American literature, and critical theory, while also developing essential academic skills such as close reading, research, and essay writing. In later years, the course expands into specialised areas such as environmental literature, transgressive texts, Romantic and Victorian writing, and global literary traditions, while continuing creative practice through genre experimentation and portfolio development. Students also engage with optional modules covering topics like media, crime, citizenship, and digital humanities, alongside opportunities for professional practice and placements. Independent projects in Years 2 and 3 allow students to design and research their own topics in depth, strengthening critical thinking and research abilities. The final year focuses on advanced creative writing, including publication-oriented work and a major creative project, supported by engagement with industry professionals such as editors and literary agents. Throughout the degree, emphasis is placed on linking literature with real-world issues, encouraging students to think critically about culture, society, and identity while developing as both writers and analytical thinkers.
