COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Education Studies program provides a broad understanding of education, child development, inclusion, and social issues through academic study and practical experience across three years. In Year 1, students explore the history of education, childhood and adolescent development, inclusivity, and academic study skills while completing a placement that introduces education in community settings. Optional modules allow students to study play-based learning or STEAM education approaches. Year 2 deepens knowledge through modules in psychology of education, educational research, contemporary issues in education, and a second placement linked to areas such as special educational needs, outdoor learning, creativity, or technology. Students can also choose specialist topics including wellbeing, educational inequalities, therapeutic approaches, children’s literature, and diverse learning needs. These modules encourage critical thinking about inclusion, diversity, social justice, and the role of education in society. In Year 3, students complete an independent dissertation and a professional placement focused on employability and career development. Core study also includes philosophy of education, examining major educational theories and debates. Optional modules explore topics such as alternative learning spaces, international education systems, compassion in practice, outdoor learning, youth marginalisation, and family support. Throughout the program, students develop research, communication, analytical, and professional skills while gaining practical experience in educational settings. The course prepares graduates for careers in education, youth work, community support, special educational needs, social services, and wider learning and development sectors.
