COURSE CURRICULUM

This BA Education Studies (SEN, Disabilities and Inclusion) focuses on supporting children and young people with additional needs through inclusive education, psychology, policy and practical experience. In Year 1, students study foundations such as the history of education, child and adolescent development, inclusive practices, and introductory academic skills, alongside placements that introduce real-world educational settings and promote reflection on safeguarding and diversity. Year 2 builds deeper knowledge through psychology of learning, research methods, contemporary education debates, and specialist study of diverse needs, supported by extended placements in settings such as SEN provision, outdoor education or creative environments. Students also explore wellbeing, therapeutic approaches, children’s literature and optional specialist topics while developing research capability. In Year 3, learners undertake an independent dissertation, alongside advanced study in philosophy of education, inclusion in challenging circumstances, and alternative learning spaces, supported by a final professional placement. Optional modules allow exploration of international perspectives, outdoor learning, STEAM education and social contexts of childhood. Across the degree, emphasis is placed on inclusive practice, critical thinking, ethical awareness, and applying theory to practice. Graduates are prepared for careers in teaching, special educational needs support, therapeutic roles, community education and related child-focused professions.
