COURSE CURRICULUM

The Early Childhood Studies BA (Hons) course provides a deep understanding of children’s development, wellbeing, learning, and social experiences in today’s changing world. Students explore topics such as child and adolescent development, inclusivity, equality, wellbeing, safeguarding, social justice, and creative teaching approaches. The course combines theory with practical experience through placements every year, helping students apply their knowledge in schools, nurseries, childcare settings, and community organisations. In Year 1, students build foundations in child development, inclusive practice, play, STEAM learning, and academic study skills. Year 2 develops research abilities and explores contemporary issues in early childhood, wellbeing, diversity, children’s literature, unequal childhoods, and therapeutic approaches. Students also gain further placement experience to strengthen professional practice and pedagogy. In the final year, students complete an independent dissertation and an advanced leadership placement, preparing them to become confident professionals and advocates for children and families. Optional modules allow students to specialise in areas such as outdoor learning, compassion and care, international education systems, childhood representation, environments for learning, and interdisciplinary teamwork around children’s needs. Throughout the course, students develop critical thinking, communication, leadership, and research skills, preparing them for careers in education, childcare, family support, community services, and wider child-focused professions.
