COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Robotics and Intelligent Systems curriculum provides a comprehensive blend of robotics, artificial intelligence, computational intelligence, perception technologies, software development, and research skills, preparing students to design and develop intelligent systems capable of interacting with and adapting to real-world environments. The program begins with Introduction to Computer Programming, where students develop practical software development skills through hands-on programming exercises, gaining experience in procedural and object-oriented programming techniques that form the foundation for modern robotics and intelligent system development. Foundations of AI introduces the core principles of artificial intelligence, including problem-solving methods, knowledge representation, reasoning techniques, and pattern discovery in data, enabling students to understand how intelligent systems process information and make decisions. Research Methods develops essential academic and professional research skills, covering project planning, research design, technical writing, data collection, ethics, presentations, research governance, and methodology selection, ensuring students are prepared to undertake independent investigations and evidence-based projects. Cognitive Robotics is a specialist module that combines robotics, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science to explore how intelligent robots can perceive, learn, reason, and interact with their environments. Students gain practical experience in implementing cognitive robotics solutions for real-world applications, supported by industry-focused activities and work-like experiences that strengthen professional readiness. Artificial Perception focuses on enabling machines to interpret and understand the world in ways similar to humans. Students explore computer vision, sensory data processing, auditory perception, sensor fusion, and related technologies while designing systems capable of processing information from multiple sources to support intelligent decision-making. Computational Intelligence builds on artificial intelligence foundations by examining nature-inspired problem-solving approaches, including machine learning, reinforcement learning, evolutionary computation, and other computational techniques that mimic natural systems to solve complex challenges. The final and most significant component of the program is the Major Project, a substantial 60-credit research project completed over approximately 15 weeks. Under academic supervision, students apply their knowledge to a specialist topic of interest, producing a dissertation or technical research paper that demonstrates advanced technical, analytical, and research capabilities. Overall, the curriculum combines software engineering, artificial intelligence, robotics, cognitive systems, machine perception, machine learning, and independent research to prepare graduates for careers in robotics engineering, intelligent systems development, automation, autonomous technologies, AI applications, smart manufacturing, research and development, and emerging technology sectors. The program’s strong focus on sustainability, industry engagement, and practical application ensures graduates possess both the technical expertise and problem-solving abilities needed to contribute effectively to the future of intelligent and autonomous systems.
