COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Public Policy and Public Engagement curriculum provides students with a strong foundation in policy analysis, democratic participation, social research, and public engagement, while developing the practical skills required for careers in policymaking, advocacy, public affairs, and community engagement. The Theory and Trends in Public Policy module introduces the fundamental theories, concepts, and frameworks that shape the study and practice of public policy. Students critically examine how policies are developed, implemented, and evaluated, while exploring contemporary challenges and emerging trends affecting governments, public institutions, and societies. The module combines traditional approaches to policy studies with innovative and digital learning methods, enabling students to understand both established and evolving policy processes. The Citizens, Values and Political Participation module focuses on the relationship between citizens, democratic institutions, and political systems within contemporary society. Students analyse changing patterns of political participation, civic engagement, democratic values, and political behaviour, while examining how these developments influence public trust, democratic legitimacy, and support for political institutions. Particular attention is given to understanding barriers to participation and identifying ways to encourage greater civic involvement. The Issues and Methods in Social Research module provides comprehensive training in research design, methodology, and data collection techniques. Students engage with key debates surrounding the production of knowledge, explore qualitative and quantitative research methods, and develop practical skills for conducting high-quality social and political research. This module prepares students for advanced independent research and supports the development of analytical and evidence-based decision-making capabilities. The programme culminates in the SPS Dissertation, a substantial independent research project that allows students to investigate a topic of personal and professional interest within the field of social and political sciences. Supported by regular supervision and specialist workshops, students design and conduct original research, analyse complex issues, and present findings in a rigorous academic format. The dissertation serves as the culmination of the knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities developed throughout the programme. Students may also enhance their studies through optional modules covering areas such as social policy, environmental citizenship, international negotiation, gender and security, global governance, political party development, policy research, and intercultural communication. Together, these modules provide a comprehensive understanding of policymaking, democratic engagement, research methods, and public participation, preparing graduates for careers in government, public affairs, policy analysis, advocacy, research, non-governmental organisations, community development, and international institutions.
