COURSE CURRICULUM
This postgraduate physics programme combines advanced taught modules with a substantial independent research project, designed to build both specialist scientific knowledge and strong research capability. The Professional Physicist module develops core research skills by focusing on scientific methods, ethical considerations, literature review techniques, and the critical appraisal of published research, preparing students for high-level academic work. Medical Imaging introduces key diagnostic and research imaging technologies such as MRI (nuclear magnetic resonance), ultrasound (sonography), computed tomography (CT), and X-ray imaging, alongside their applications in medical diagnostics and image-processing methods. Imaging Matter: From Atoms to Galaxies expands imaging knowledge across a wide range of scales, covering digital image capture and processing, image enhancement and compression, and advanced microscopy techniques including polarising light microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, confocal imaging, and near-field microscopy, supported by laboratory work and case studies. Current Topics in Physics keeps students engaged with cutting-edge developments in areas such as liquid crystal physics, soft condensed matter, laser processing of nanomaterials, photonics, complex fluid dynamics, space weather, acoustics, astrophysics, cosmology, and computational methods used in specialised applications like art conservation. Science Communication develops the ability to explain complex physics clearly to both specialist and general audiences through modern formats and applied communication tasks, often in real-world or outreach-style contexts. Advanced Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Computing covers some of the most fundamental and intellectually challenging areas of modern physics, including quantum theory and emerging quantum technologies, and is typically offered in alternate years. The programme concludes with a major Research Project worth 60 credits, where students carry out independent, in-depth scientific investigation, applying advanced theoretical and practical skills to a focused topic within physics or imaging science. Overall, the course provides a balanced mix of advanced physics theory, imaging science, research training, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in scientific research, technology development, or further doctoral study.
