COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Pharmacology curriculum provides a comprehensive understanding of human biology, disease mechanisms, drug action, neuroscience, and biomedical research through a combination of specialist modules and independent scientific investigation. The Cell Biology and Physiology module develops a strong foundation in cellular function and physiological processes, introducing students to modern pharmacological concepts while exploring cell organisation, gene expression, metabolism, and the operation of major physiological systems. The Neurophysiology module examines contemporary topics in molecular and cellular neuroscience, drawing on current scientific literature to investigate neuronal pathways involved in behaviour, mechanisms of neural degeneration, neurotoxicity, and recent advances in the understanding of neurological and psychiatric disorders. The Biology of Disease module focuses on the underlying mechanisms of major human diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and kidney fibrosis. Students explore disease development, tumour progression, metastasis, and emerging therapeutic approaches such as gene therapy and immunotherapy, gaining valuable insight into the biological basis of disease and treatment strategies. The Research Methods and Bioethics module equips students with essential research skills, including literature review, project design, research planning, data analysis, and scientific presentation, while also examining ethical issues in research and the processes involved in obtaining ethical approval. In the Pharmacology module, students investigate how genetic variation influences physiological processes and responses to medications, exploring the principles of personalised medicine and the future of tailored drug therapies based on an individual’s genetic profile. The Techniques in Macromolecular Analysis module provides advanced knowledge of methods used to isolate, purify, analyse, and predict the structure and function of biological macromolecules. Students also develop research skills through the use of electronic simulations, bioinformatics tools, and data interpretation techniques. The programme culminates in a substantial Research Project, where students undertake an in-depth investigation within a specialised area of bioscience under academic supervision. Through this project, students critically evaluate scientific literature, design and apply appropriate research methodologies, analyse and interpret experimental data, and communicate findings through professional scientific formats. Together, these modules develop advanced scientific knowledge, laboratory competence, analytical thinking, and independent research capabilities, preparing graduates for careers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, biomedical research, healthcare sciences, regulatory sectors, and doctoral-level study in pharmacology and related disciplines.
