COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Paramedic Science programme combines academic study, clinical training, and extensive placement experience to prepare students for registration as competent and confident paramedics capable of delivering high-quality urgent and emergency care. The Principles of Paramedic Practice module provides the foundational knowledge and practical skills required for effective pre-hospital care, enabling students to assess, manage, and treat patients in diverse emergency environments. Supported by approximately 600 hours of clinical placement experience, students apply classroom learning in real healthcare settings while developing professional competence and confidence. The Human Health and Illness module develops a comprehensive understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and the physical changes that occur during illness, injury, and disease. This knowledge forms the basis for accurate patient assessment, clinical reasoning, and evidence-based intervention. The Legal, Professional and Ethical Practice module introduces students to the professional responsibilities of paramedics, including accountability to regulatory bodies, legal frameworks, ethical decision-making, patient rights, confidentiality, and professional standards required within healthcare practice. During the second year, the Advancing Paramedic Practice module builds upon previously acquired knowledge and skills by focusing on more complex patient management, clinical decision-making, and advanced care approaches. Supported by a further 600 hours of clinical placement, students gain valuable experience managing a wide range of patient presentations while refining their professional judgement and practical abilities. The Transitioning to Autonomous Practice Supporting and Developing Others module prepares students for professional registration and independent practice by developing leadership, supervision, communication, and mentoring skills. Students learn how to support colleagues, provide constructive feedback, contribute to team development, and promote high standards of patient care within multidisciplinary healthcare environments. The Dissertation module provides an opportunity for independent research and critical inquiry within an area of clinical interest. Students may undertake a service evaluation, clinical change project, audit, critical review of practice, or another approved project, allowing them to develop advanced research, analytical, and problem-solving skills while contributing to improvements in healthcare practice. Together, these modules provide a balanced combination of scientific knowledge, clinical expertise, research capability, professional development, and extensive placement experience, preparing graduates for successful careers as registered paramedics within modern healthcare systems.
