COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the MSc Occupational Therapy programme, students develop the foundational knowledge, professional skills, and practical experience required for occupational therapy practice. The Optimising Occupational Performance module focuses on understanding human sciences, health conditions, and occupational analysis, enabling students to assess how physical, psychological, and social factors affect a person's ability to engage in meaningful activities. Students learn to apply the occupational therapy process, including assessment, intervention planning, and professional reasoning across different stages of the lifespan. The Occupation for Health and Wellbeing module explores the history, philosophy, and theoretical foundations of occupational therapy, with a strong emphasis on occupational science and the role of meaningful occupation in promoting health and wellbeing. Students also examine the contribution of other health and social care professionals and develop a strong professional identity. The Evidence-Based Occupational Therapist module strengthens research and analytical skills by teaching students how to critically evaluate, interpret, and apply research evidence to support effective and evidence-based practice. Professional and Scholarly Skills in Occupational Therapy introduces the legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities of occupational therapists while developing essential communication, reflection, teamwork, and professional practice skills. Alongside academic study, students complete Practice-Based Learning 1 and Practice-Based Learning 2, the first two of four professional placements within the programme. These placements provide valuable real-world experience in occupational therapy settings, allowing students to apply classroom learning, develop clinical competence, and gain insight into professional practice under supervision. Together, these modules create a comprehensive foundation in occupational therapy theory, research, professional values, and practical skills, preparing students for more advanced study and clinical placements in the second year while building confidence and competence as future occupational therapists.
