COURSE CURRICULUM

The accelerated Mental Health Nursing programme combines academic learning with extensive clinical practice to prepare students for registration as Mental Health Nurses and for delivering high-quality, evidence-based mental healthcare. The Fundamentals in Nursing module introduces contemporary nursing values, philosophies, and professional standards that underpin effective nursing practice. Students develop essential clinical and communication skills while enhancing self-awareness, professional identity, and the ability to provide compassionate care to individuals from diverse backgrounds. Nursing Theory and Practice I examines the biological, psychological, and social factors that influence health and wellbeing, enabling students to assess needs, plan person-centred care, and promote health across a range of populations and care settings. Nursing Theory and Practice II builds upon this foundation by focusing on the provision of care for individuals with complex healthcare needs, including those experiencing multiple physical and mental health conditions. Students gain advanced knowledge of person-centred approaches and the impact of co-morbidities on healthcare delivery and patient outcomes. The Practice Assessment: Year One module supports students throughout their clinical placements by ensuring completion of mandatory training, preparation for professional practice, reflection on placement experiences, and achievement of required clinical competencies. During the second year, the Global Health module explores major global health challenges and examines how policy and practice initiatives address issues such as poverty, inequality, migration, conflict, climate change, healthcare systems, economic globalisation, and stigma. The Leadership and Transition in Nursing module prepares students for professional registration by developing leadership capabilities, critical reflection, self-awareness, and an understanding of leadership theories, healthcare policy, research, and change management. Students learn how effective leadership contributes to safe, high-quality, and innovative nursing practice. The Research and Practice module enables students to undertake an independent empirical study or literature-based dissertation on a topic relevant to nursing practice, strengthening their research, analytical, and evidence-based decision-making skills. The Practice Assessment: Year Two module continues to support achievement during clinical placements and ensures students meet professional standards required for registration. Together, these modules provide a strong combination of theoretical knowledge, practical experience, leadership development, and research expertise, preparing graduates to deliver safe, compassionate, culturally competent, and person-centred mental health care across a wide range of healthcare environments.
