COURSE CURRICULUM

The Molecular Microbiology MSc is structured to combine advanced scientific training, applied bioscience knowledge, and a substantial research experience, preparing students for careers in research, healthcare, biotechnology, and related scientific industries. The programme begins with Research Methods and Bioethics, which develops essential academic skills in literature review, research design, data analysis, and scientific communication, while also addressing ethical considerations and governance procedures involved in biological research. A core scientific foundation is provided through Molecular Microbiology, which explores microbial structure, physiology, genetics, and behaviour at the molecular level, with case studies focusing on cell communication, regulatory systems, and host–pathogen interactions informed by current research developments. Students also study Medical Microbiology, which examines the causes, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites, delivered through a combination of eLearning and interactive seminars. The programme further includes Microbial Diagnostics, which focuses on modern diagnostic methods such as culture-based techniques, serology, PCR, microarrays, and sequencing technologies used in infectious disease detection. Techniques in Macromolecular Analysis provides advanced training in laboratory and computational methods for studying macromolecules, including isolation, purification, structural analysis, and bioinformatic approaches, helping students develop strong practical and analytical skills. In addition, the Business and Enterprise module introduces students to innovation and commercialisation in the biosciences, covering topics such as new product development, marketing, pricing, and the process of launching bioscience ventures. The course culminates in a 60-credit Research Project, where students undertake an in-depth investigation in a specialist area, applying literature review, experimental or computational methods, and data analysis to produce a substantial piece of scientific work. Overall, the programme is designed to provide a balanced mix of theoretical understanding, laboratory expertise, diagnostic knowledge, and research experience, ensuring graduates are well prepared for employment in bioscience industries, clinical laboratories, or further academic research at postgraduate or doctoral level.
