COURSE CURRICULUM

The Medical Engineering curriculum provides a multidisciplinary blend of biomedical engineering, medical technologies, advanced materials, robotics, signal processing, and research skills, preparing students to develop innovative healthcare solutions and medical devices. Prosthetics and Rehabilitation Robotics explores modern advancements in bionics, prosthetic systems, assistive robotics, and exoskeleton technologies, enabling students to analyse existing devices, evaluate their effectiveness, and propose improvements that enhance patient mobility, independence, and quality of life. Fluid Dynamics in Physiology and Medical Devices examines the movement of bodily fluids and the interaction between physiological systems and implanted medical devices, helping students understand how engineering solutions can influence blood flow, respiratory processes, and other biological functions while improving medical outcomes. Medical Applications of Smart Materials focuses on the properties and uses of advanced materials that can respond to environmental changes, demonstrating how these materials can be applied to address challenges in medical diagnostics, treatment, monitoring, and device design. Medical Signal and Image Processing develops expertise in analysing biological signals and medical images using programming and computational techniques. Students learn to process data from biosensors such as EEG, ECG, and wearable devices, assess signal accuracy, identify artefacts, and extract meaningful information from complex datasets and imaging systems. Current Developments in Biomedical Engineering explores emerging technologies, innovations, and industry trends within biomedical engineering, fostering an understanding of continuous technological advancement and the skills required to contribute to future developments in healthcare engineering. Research Methods equips students with the ability to conduct professional and academic research through literature reviews, critical evaluation, ethical research practices, data collection, research design, and quantitative and qualitative analysis using specialist software tools. The programme culminates in an Individual Industrial or Research Project, a substantial capstone project where students investigate a real engineering challenge, design and implement solutions, evaluate outcomes, and demonstrate advanced project management, communication, and professional development skills. Together, these modules provide strong expertise in biomedical technology, medical device design, rehabilitation engineering, medical imaging, biosignal analysis, smart materials, and applied research. Graduates are well prepared for careers in medical device development, biomedical engineering, healthcare technology innovation, rehabilitation technology, clinical engineering, research and development, medical imaging, and healthcare-focused engineering industries while contributing to advancements that improve patient care and medical outcomes.
