COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Forensic Science curriculum provides a strong combination of scientific research skills, forensic expertise, legal knowledge, and specialist training in contemporary forensic investigation. The programme begins with Research Methods and Independent Study, which develops the essential skills required for independent scientific research, including research design, literature review techniques, information retrieval, critical evaluation of evidence, and the use of specialist library and information technology resources. The Forensic Expert module focuses on the professional role of forensic scientists within the legal system, providing an understanding of the standards governing expert evidence, courtroom procedures, and the responsibilities, ethical obligations, and liabilities of expert witnesses. Bioarchaeology introduces students to the forensic investigation of human remains, particularly in cases involving missing persons and unexplained deaths. Students study search techniques, scene recording, excavation and recovery methods, and the evidential value of environmental materials such as pollen, plants, and soils in forensic investigations. Biometrics and Forensic Databases examines modern methods of identification, authentication, and verification, while also exploring database theory and the legal, ethical, and societal implications of storing and using biometric and forensic data. Advanced Topics in Forensic Science encourages students to investigate emerging developments, current challenges, and contemporary debates within the forensic sciences, strengthening their analytical, evaluative, and critical-thinking capabilities. A central feature of the programme is the Research Project, where students undertake an extensive laboratory-based investigation on a specialist forensic topic. This involves reviewing relevant scientific literature, designing and conducting experimental research, analysing findings, and presenting outcomes through a professional presentation, research poster, and written thesis. Research projects may focus on areas such as forensic toxicology, sudden death investigations, allergen cross-reactivity, digestive transit analysis, police scent dog training, or emerging criminal trends such as acid attacks. To further specialise their expertise, students select one optional module. Analytical Toxicology develops advanced knowledge of the detection, analysis, and interpretation of drugs, alcohol, poisons, and toxic substances in biological and forensic samples, while International Environmental Crime examines environmental offences, wildlife crime, pollution, environmental legislation, and the forensic techniques used to investigate crimes against the environment. Together, these modules equip graduates with advanced forensic science knowledge, practical laboratory competence, research expertise, legal awareness, and specialist analytical skills required for careers in forensic laboratories, law enforcement support, toxicology, environmental investigations, criminal justice agencies, and scientific research.
