COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Biomedical Science is structured across three semesters and combines core scientific knowledge, specialist subject options, and independent research. In Semester 1, students study core modules such as Cell Culture and Antibody Technology, which introduces laboratory techniques used in biomedical research and therapeutic development, and Biology of Disease, which explores the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying human illnesses. Students can also choose from optional modules including Microbial Diagnostics, Medical Microbiology, and Molecular Biology, allowing them to develop expertise in disease-causing microorganisms, diagnostic methods, and genetic and molecular processes. During Semester 2, the programme focuses on research skills and specialised biomedical applications. Core modules include Research Methods and Bioethics, which develops scientific investigation, data analysis, and ethical decision-making skills, and Haematology and Transfusion Science, which examines blood-related disorders and transfusion practices through blended learning. Optional modules in this semester include Pharmacology, which studies drug actions and therapeutic interventions, and Cellular Pathology, which investigates disease processes at the tissue and cellular levels through e-learning delivery. In Semester 3, students undertake a Research Project, the major component of the programme, where they apply their knowledge and research skills to an independent scientific investigation. Together, these modules provide comprehensive training in biomedical science, preparing graduates for careers in healthcare, research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and further academic study.
